The likelihood of a partial shutdown in the US increased sharply on Friday.
The current budget expires at midnight tonight, and the rescue deal in the Senate has encountered procedural obstacles, Reuters reports.
Funding for the Department of Homeland Security has become a sticking point. Senate Democrats are demanding stricter oversight of immigration agents after a series of tragic incidents.
Over the past month, agents have shot and killed two US citizens with no criminal record. The final straw was the death of Alex Pretty in Minneapolis last weekend.
The plan agreed upon by Democrats and Trump called for passing the main budget for most agencies, separating funding for the Department of Homeland Security into a separate package, and extending it for just two weeks. The parties also agreed to quickly agree on new restrictions for agents: a ban on masks, mandatory use of body cameras, and an end to mobile patrols. However, approval of the deal has stalled due to objections from several senators. The situation is further complicated by logistics: even if the Senate approves the bill, it must be passed by the House of Representatives. The House is currently in recess, and Speaker Mike Johnson stated that getting members of Congress to Washington before midnight would be extremely difficult.
