Artificial intelligence lab Anthropic will not relax its restrictions on military use, citing a source familiar with the matter, following a meeting between the company and the Pentagon.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to discuss the months-long dispute between the two sides. The AI startup refused to lift safeguards that prevent its technology from being used for autonomous weapons targeting and domestic surveillance in the US.
Pentagon officials argue that the government should be obligated to comply only with US laws.
During the meeting, Hegseth gave Anthropic an ultimatum: either the company be deemed a supply chain risk, or the government will enforce a law that will force Anthropic to change its rules, a source familiar with the matter said. The government gave Anthropic until Friday to respond.
