President Donald Trump has nominated University of Minnesota professor Christopher Phelan to be his chief economic adviser, the White House announced on Tuesday.
Phelan will fill the position left vacant by Trump's nomination of former Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Stephen Miran to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
Phelan has taught in the economics department at the University of Minnesota for nearly 19 years. He previously served as a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, according to his LinkedIn profile. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago.
The appointment requires Senate confirmation. Miran resigned as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers in February, fulfilling a promise he made to the Senate.
