President Donald Trump called on the Federal Reserve on Monday to cut interest rates, declaring that the United States should have the lowest borrowing rates in the world.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized the need to lower rates and pointed out that other countries are paying less on their debt.
The president praised Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh but suggested that the central bank's board members are guided by political considerations. Trump acknowledged Warsh's intentions but emphasized that he must work within the board's framework.
Trump's comments come as the Federal Reserve maintains its independence in monetary policy decisions.
