President Donald Trump said on Monday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had responded to his recent attempts to establish contact
—after Trump decided to scale back military exercises with South Korea.
Trump made these comments in the Oval Office when reporters asked why Kim had not responded to his overtures.
"He did respond," Trump said.
The relationship between the two leaders was a focal point during Trump's first term, including an exchange of letters. The topic has drawn less attention during his second term.
"Kim Jong Un has always treated me with great respect; we met many times—actually twice at the summit level—and we communicated and spent time together. I understand him. He understands me," Trump stated.
Trump had ordered a reduction in the scale of joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises even before receiving a response from Kim.
