The White House is proposing to cut more than 9,400 employees and just over $1.5 billion from the Transportation Security Administration's budget,
according to budget documents. The TSA currently employs 60,000 people and provides airport security.
President Donald Trump on Friday proposed requiring smaller airports to abandon TSA services and use private security as a first step toward privatizing the agency, which was created after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The White House stated that privatizing smaller airports would reduce TSA's workforce by more than 4,500 jobs.
The TSA proposes cutting another 4,800 jobs through efficiency improvements, eliminating gate staffing, and eliminating duplication of functions.
