The US Senate has approved a short-term spending bill designed to prevent a government shutdown until the November midterm elections.

The document does not include President Donald Trump's requests for funding for the war with Iran or for new voter ID requirements, Bloomberg reports.

Senators passed the bill by a 90-6 vote. The bill provides funding for federal agencies from the start of the new fiscal year, October 1, through December 11.

The bill now goes to the House of Representatives, which is expected to consider it after lawmakers return on August 31.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins called the bill's passage "an important step toward preventing a devastating government shutdown that harms vital programs and federal workers." Lawmakers rejected Trump's demand for voting restrictions, which Republican leaders said lacked sufficient support to pass. The Senate is also expected to recess for the summer without considering a separate White House request for approximately $70 billion in emergency funding for the Iran war.

The bill includes several provisions supported by the administration that allow military equipment projects to continue during the temporary funding period.

Senators rejected a proposed one-month delay in implementing new cannabis regulations after objections from conservative lawmakers. The White House supported the extension, which would have benefited companies producing cannabis products with low psychoactive content.

The bill also blocks a White House-proposed rule that critics say would have diverted federal grants to Republican-leaning states. It also prevents the Border Patrol from receiving additional funding through a legislative loophole. The bipartisan vote contrasts with earlier budget disagreements that led to a record-length government shutdown last year and a shorter shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security this spring.

Democrats secured the votes needed to overcome the delayed debate, concluding that another government shutdown would not yield political dividends ahead of the midterm elections. Party leaders are seeking to focus the campaign on Trump's management of the American economy.

The bill will require House approval to be sent to the president for signature.
