The increased tariff will take effect immediately and could remain in place for up to 150 days under current trade law, though the measure could face legal challenges.
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he plans to raise a temporary tariff on imports from all countries to 15% from the 10% imposed earlier this week following a Supreme Court ruling that struck down parts of his previous tariff program.
The increased tariff will take effect immediately and could remain in place for up to 150 days under current trade law, though the measure could face legal challenges.
Trump said the administration would use the temporary measure while working to implement new tariffs that comply with legal requirements after the court ruled against tariffs imposed under the economic emergency.
"I, as President of the United States of America, will immediately raise the 10% worldwide tariff... to the fully authorized and legally verified level of 15%," Trump declared in a post on Truth Social, adding that many countries have been "ripping off" the US for decades. The temporary levy applies in addition to the duties already in force.
