Bitget to acquire Thai crypto exchange GMO for expansion in Asia

Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has reached an agreement to acquire GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand),

a licensed digital asset exchange and broker headquartered in Bangkok. The deal will provide the company with a regulated presence in the Thai market, Investing.com has learned.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Japanese firm GMO Internet and its subsidiary, GMO-Z.com Holdings (Thailand)—along with other shareholders—will sell their entire stake in the business to BTGT Management (Thailand), an entity in which Bitget holds an interest.

The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. Completion of the deal is subject to regulatory approval, including clearance regarding the change in the controlling shareholder.

Once the deal closes and all necessary authorizations are obtained, Bitget plans to launch its trading platform in the Thai market through the local exchange.

In Thailand, digital asset exchanges are required to obtain a license from the country’s Securities and Exchange Commission. Last year, authorities blocked access to a number of unlicensed foreign platforms.

According to information obtained by Investing.com, Bitget continues to explore opportunities to expand its footprint in Southeast Asia.

The exchange reportedly serves over 125 million users and offers trading in cryptocurrency tokens, as well as tokenized stocks, ETFs, commodities, and currency pairs.
